Description

Read my first trade of the Image Comics title Wytches, finally. October is here after all and I get in the mindset for this kind of whatnot. Allow me to perfectly sum up why this collaboration between Batman writer Scott Snyder and artist Jock is so damn effective. Color work done by Matt Hollingsworth, lettering provided by Clem Robins, and editing by David Brothers.

Doesn't contain any major SPOILERS.

Whilst the wytches themselves are these gruesome creatures, being a parent in a world where these hideous monstrosities exist is even more horrifying. How can that be? Because they consume children. Simple yes, but oh so brilliant at the same time, heh. As you read on, it gets deeper and more sinister. This is not a series for the faint of heart. Absolutely superb stuff from beginning to end. Honestly, it might in fact top most of what Snyder has done previously. Yes, this includes his current run on Batman, in my opinion.

Scott’s innovative and frightening concept of wytches (I still don’t know why it is spelled with a “y”: likely to differentiate itself further from the traditional connection that belongs to the word and the idea of a magic using witch most of us shall be familiar with?) manifesting through Jock’s creepy visuals, Hollingsworth’s prestige usage of colors, and the chilling lettering work of Clem Robins has to been seen to be fully appreciated. I noticed myself simply staring at the pages just to properly drink in the atmosphere, the emotions, and the glorious art. Everyone involved with Wytches deserves a round of applause. It is just awesome (real definition) in the best way possible.

If constructing an original narrative wasn’t enough, Snyder carefully places in appropriate flashbacks and moments of characterization between the suspense and terror being depicted. This serves to enhances the reader’s connections (upping the sense of dread as well) to the the Brooks family: we’re given just enough so the rest of the yarn doesn’t feel bogged down. The pacing and position of them functions greatly within the story arc Scott weaves. Additionally, you genuinely care about these characters because of these mentioned scenes combined with the comic’s powerful artwork.

Wytches #7 is slated to be released this winter. Can’t wait to sink my teeth into it! Wytches has already been green-lit to become a future film too. *BEYOND EXCITED*
